Mike Lindup Changes 2 Mention

Back when I was learning my craft as a keyboardist and vocalist, Changes by Mike Lindup became my most played and studied vinyl. Of course, being into Jazz Funk, Level 42 were one of my favourite bands, but while Changes had elements of funk, it also had some distinctly different influences, including classical and singer-songwriter styles that helped to expand my musical palette. I spent many hours working to perfect Life Will Never Be The Same and playing it around the acoustic clubs in town (yes, lugging the old KX88 and a sound module along!).

There was much excitement in the air amongst the synth and Level 42 fan communities when Mike announced Changes 2, so imagine my utter shock when I finally receive my CD and see my name there in the Thank-you’s! What a total honour! Mike is one of the lovely people of the music industry and still has such a gentle and humble nature despite his huge successes. I really wish him well with this project and hope to see a live performance of the album sometime, since the launch night was sold out when I tried to get tickets!

It’s clear how much love and care has gone into this album from everyone involved (it’s good to see Manu Katché back) and there are a few highlights, including Atlantia (fantastic groove, lyrics, harmonies, chord structure, the rhodes), You Can’t Just Live As An Island (that bassline!). David is a beautiful piece reminiscent of Life Will Never Be The Same in it’s lyrical content, which I presume is a tribute to Mike’s father, a respected composer himself. All As One is a beautifully crafted dreamscape and probably my favourite musical moment on the whole album.

With elements of Soul, Latin, Funk, Jazz, classic piano and rhodes, gorgeous harmonies, some nicely programmed synths and great chord progressions, the whole thing sounds fresh and modern and is beautifully produced by Toni Economides and Mike Patto. A really enjoyable listen that Mike must be very proud of and the CD is one that I will treasure! x
