Downtime

Downtime

Downtime Plug-in Capture
Downtime is released today and it’s the first in a new collection of instrumentals, inspired by some of my favourite artists like Herbie Hancock, Wally Badarou, Urbanator and many more.

This is a fun little project that I can create entirely ‘in-the-box’ and to show how in-the-box it is, the video is made up of a lot of the plug-ins used in creating this piece. Here’s a list of all tracks in my DAW, plus I hadย SSL Native Bus Compressor,ย XLN Audio RC20 Retro Color,ย UJAM Retro Finisher,ย iZotope Audiolens,ย iZotope Ozone Elements,ย iZotope Ozone Vintage Limiter and theย Logic EQ and Compressor on my Bus.

This is my take on Jazz-Fusion and it very much sticks to a jazz format, with the main melody at beginning and end and a couple of lead sections in the middle. Looking forward to playing this with a band, or hearing another band play it in their set!

The artwork was generated by AI in Canva and the video created using HitFilm Express.

It’s available from today on my Bandcamp store and from 23rd February 2024 on all other stores and streaming sites.

New Band!

New Band!

YCB - Panoramic Fantasy

Being a solo artist is fun but it can be lonely, even when you’re hiring session musicians to work with. Sometimes I watch my favourite bands and wish that I was in a band like it, where everyone is involved in the songwriting process and artistic development.

Well, the dream has become a reality!

The YCB Band have asked if I’d like to play keys and contribute to vocals and the response was an almighty YES PLEASE!

YCB are all about Brit Funk and I’ll finally get to play some challenging chops. Really looking forward to our first gig later in the year and will post up some behind the scenes from our rehearsals in the coming weeks ๐Ÿ™‚ x

Here’s a track of theirs, Panoramic Fantasy, with some of my own keys added.

The new single, Bring Those Good Times Back, has launched today! It’s always an exciting time releasing any music, but this feels particularly special as I have some exceptionally talented musicians contributing to it.

Ever since getting into music, it’s been the dream to be part of the ‘Jazz-Funk / Acid Jazz’ gang and I’ve previously been lucky enough to have musical contributions from Nick Van Gelder, Gary Barnacle and Johnny Thirkell. I was overjoyed when Matt Johnson and Derrick McKenzie agreed to play on the track. Right away they got the vibe that was needed and I have to say that I’m so happy with the end result. It was an absolute joy to work with such professional and experienced musicians and I hope there will be many more opportunities in the future.

Of course, I couldn’t do a track without my trusty buddy Gaz Rackham on bass, his playing still leaves me in awe after 20 odd years and to finish it all off I tracked down Jack Pennifold to play guitar, as I’d been so impressed with his professionalism and his robot timing on the previous track (listen out for those guitar triplets, awesome!)

Mixing Jazz-Funk to give it a retro vibe while still being fresh and modern enough to end up in Nu Disco playlists is quite a feat but Jez Larder at Skyline Studio did just that, a very talented mix engineer that I highly recommend.

So there we are. It took a while as these things are cash and time hungry when you’re an independant musician, but I now have enough tracks in the repertoire to get out on the road! ๐Ÿ™‚

The video above is the Nu Disco remix, you can view the original mix here.

New Single Preview

Really excited to share this preview of the new single with you! Back when I started this entire project of inviting guest artists from the world of Jazz-Funk to play, I had no idea if anyone would say yes. Now here we are at the 4th single release with contributions by Matt Johnson and Derrick McKenzie of Jamiroquai!

Gaz Rackham and Jack Pennifold are completing the lineup for this release and it’s mixed by Jez Larder at Skyline Studios. So incredibly grateful to everyone that’s contributed, so proud of the end result and looking forward to sharing the full track with you later this week.

Hey lovelies, it’s time for a new track! There’s a particular sound that I’ve always been after so this year I’ve taken some time out to learn some new production skills and get more musicians to contribute, so here is the result ๐Ÿ™‚

This time the track is featuring a contribution from the illustrious Johnny Thirkell on brass! Again I’m utterly honoured that someone of his calibre has taken the time to work on this project – just check out his discography! (It includes working with Jamiroquai, Level 42, Tina Turner, David Bowie and contributing to 25 number one singles!!)

Also on the track is my adorable buddy Gaz Rackham playing one of his infectious basslines. As I’ve said before, he is the Mark to my Mike, the Zender to my Jay, the Stan to my George, hehe! x

Percussion is by Adam Alesi,ย a fantastic session drummer from LA, Violin by talented classical player Ayran Nicodemo in Brazil and the funky guitar is from the awesome Jack Pennifold in London – a truly international collaboration – thanks guys! ๐Ÿ™‚

Currently it’s only out on Bandcamp and will be released to all the major stores along with a remix at the end of October x

Back in the days when we used to go and watch Level 42 in concert, I was in awe of the whole band and never dreamed that one day Saxophonist Gary Barnacle would be playing on one of my tracks.

Well here we are and Gary has done an absolutely awesome Alto Sax lead break for my new single, Living Your Best Life. It’s been a joy working with him – despite his awesome discography he is so down to earth and really is one of the good guys from the industry!

I was trying to capture an old school jazz-funk vibe with this one, complete with retro synth lead break.

As always Gaz Rackham has done an awesome job on the bassline, with some classic ‘Gazzy moments’ thrown in there to delight your ears.

This has been so much fun to work on and I really hope you enjoy strutting your funky stuff to it! x

Out on 23rd October 2020.
